This is a two fold mistake that will cost you your life in a Wilderness Survival Situation. The first fold of this mistake is not having a proper shelterwith you, the second fold is not having the knowledge to build a shelter from nature’s tools which are all around you. When talking about someone or a group of people who died in the Wilderness there is a common term that you will hear come up, exposure. Whether it is hypothermia or heat stroke, the bottom line is you either did not have shelter (tent, tarp, sleeping bag with bivvy) or you didn’t have the knowledge to build a suitable shelter to shield yourself from the elements. Remember, Staying Dry is the first rule of Survival.

Right now the residents of Boulder, Colo., and the surrounding areas are inundated with water. Today the crisis continued as the Colorado National Guard evacuated 2500 people from the nearby town of Lyons. And the news is still filled with startling shots of high floodwaters caused by flash flooding punishing the area. PopMech's home and survival experts have provided some helpful tips after major flooding incidents in the past. Here's what you need to know if you find your town inundated. Last night congress approved the budget, and agreed to reopen the government; but, like everything this government does there’s a catch. While many are celebrating the fact that we didn’t go into default, they’re ignoring the fact that congress did nothing to fix the mess this countries in, and instead probably made the matter even worse. Not only did they guarantee that we’ll be in the same mess 90 days from now – because that’s how long they agreed to fund the government for – but not a single person addressed the fact that the country is still almost 17 trillion dollars in debt. In fact, the bill that passed added even more debt and was stuffed full of bribes that sent money back to the supporting house member’s districts. One of the bribes tucked into the bill even gave money, $174,000, to a dead senator’s wealthy wife. You really can’t make this stuff up! 90 Days till we face another Default and another Government Shutdown 90 days from now, our government will run through the same exercise in stupidity, as they fight the same battle over the same exact issues that shutdown the government to begin with. Not only did they completely ignore the problems, but they helped make the U.S the laughingstock of the world. Immediately after the U.S. House passed the 90 day extension, the Chinese downgraded the U.S. Credit Rating, warning that fundamentals for a potential default remained “unchanged”. The Chinese ratings agency, Dagong, lowered its ratings for US local and foreign currency credit from A to A- saying, “The fundamental situation that the debt growth rate significantly outpaces that of fiscal income and gross domestic product remains unchanged.” … “Hence the government is still approaching the verge of default crisis, a situation that cannot be substantially alleviated in the foreseeable future.” In my opinion, this whole debacle has highlighted how much trouble we’re really in. Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a government who cannot pay its bills, and has no hope of ever paying down the massive amounts of debt they’ve acquired; a government who has grown so out of control that they started arresting people for entering the National Parks, and a host of government workers who were willing to go along with the Gestapo like tactics; and a Nation that looks like it’s on the edge of the abyss, just waiting to plunge over the cliff. But don’t worry 90 days from now we get to do all over again. This mixture of mud and grasses can be used for a multitude of projects, from construction of shelters, cooking structures, kilns and food caches, to wrapping food for clay baking (as seen in my articles on these subjects in Wilderness Waymagazine ) and much more. In case you find yourself on the move without a vehicle or pack animals to carry heavy cooking vessels like cast iron skillets and dutch ovens (or in case you get separated from your well stocked rucksack), here are some of the many other ways of cooking food using natural materials, as described in “The Green Beret Gourmet”: Today’s post is on homemade fire starters. They are easy and cheap to make. The one I have used for years and always works is cotton balls and vaseline. Simply impregnate the cotton balls with vaseline. This can be done easy by rolling the cotton ball in warm vaseline. By warm I mean set it out in the sun warm, I do not recommend liquefying the vaseline on a stove. During our boiling, broiling, blistering summer of 2012 here in the Missouri Ozarks, water was a topic of conversation wherever we went. Creeks and ponds dried up (some never recovered) and the water table dropped, forcing a few neighbors to have their well pumps lowered or to even have deeper wells drilled. Joseph Alton M.D., aka Dr. Bones, wrote an article recently reviewing Athlete’s foot (and Jock itch), which provided some excellent tips for prevention and treatment options. I wanted to add some additional information with regard to general antifungal treatments focused on natural and herbal treatments that may be useful. In times of trouble, natural remedies may be our only option. You may also want to try a more natural approach to treatment because you prefer them! The list of external fungal infections includes forms of “tinea”, which is caused by the fungus Trihopytum and (although sometimes referred to as “ringworm”) is NOT a worm: 1. Tinea capitus- “ringworm” of the scalp or neck Days to germination: Started by root cuttings, not seeds Days to harvest: 250 days or more (8 to 10 months) Light requirements: Full sun, or slight shade Water requirements: Regular watering Soil: Well-drained soil Container: Necessary for most climates Introduction Turmeric is likely best known as a pungent and bright yellow spice in Indian cuisine. It’s a tropical plant, and can only be grown outdoors if you live in zones 9 or warmer. Your plants won’t be able to tolerate any climate colder than 65F. Turmeric is different from most herbs in that you are not going to be harvesting the leaves, but the roots instead. The plant grows an underground tuber, or rhizome much like ginger does. It can take up to 10 months for a new crop of roots to develop, and it’s not a plant that you can harvest in small pieces through the season. It’s closely related to ginger, and has a similar strong taste that is a little hard to describe. Turmeric is the main ingredient in most Indian curry powders. It sometimes goes by the name of Indian saffron but is not related to saffron at all. When planning a vegetable garden it's easy to ignore problems that can occur when plants are in the ground. In this video we look at 3 common mistakes gardeners make when planning their gardens and give simple solutions. Making sure your plants are spaced correctly, using companion planting to defend against pests and sowing in batches every few weeks so you have backup options are all important. This video shows how to use the Garden Planner to insure that your crops have the best chance of producing a great harvest. |
