Since being able to start a fire is so important, it is better to rely on more than 2 ways to start a fire. Here is a short list of 5 fire starters for ones bug out bag
1. Water/storm proof matches
1.You need to be waterproof them. Wikihow.com has a good article on how to waterproof your matches.
2. You should store matches in multiple locations. If you have them all in one container or bag their is a higher risk of losing them. Mason Jars are a great place to store matches. One could place sandpaper on the inside cover or the striking band from the side of the box.Never fear losing your matches of them getting wet.
2. Lighters
3 Firesteel and Striker
A firesteel and striker is important to have for many reasons. First, it works even if it gets soaking wet. Its the best back up to have if all of your other fire starters got completely soaked or ruined for some reason the firesteel will still work.
Also, it will most likely outlast all of your matches and lighters put together. Many firesteels advertise 3000 strikes, and some as many as 7000.
4. Steel wool and Battery
I don’t consider this in the fire tender category because it is the steel wool itself combined with the battery that actually makes the fire.
Two things to remember: The finer the steel wool the better. Also, it only takes a tiny bit of steel will for this to work. Just enough to cover both poles of the battery.
