One of the basic needs of surviving is the ability to start a fire for heat and for cooking. Today I will explain the use of magnesium as a fire starter. This is a must for any survivalist, camper or hiker.
Place a small amount of wood, dried grass or other burnable material in a pile and add larger pieces as the fire starts.. Take a knife, scrape down the side of the magnesium which will put small particles into your pile. Use about a quarter size. If there is wind, make sure to make an indention in the ground to prevent it from flying away. Even if the magnesium is wet, it will spark and you will be able to start a fire. Use a flint to strike and you have a fire.
There are several types of magnesium fire starters on the market. Pictured are three different kinds.
