Flashlight. Flashlights would be a good idea to have. One battery powered in case of emergency of the other one failing and a solar powered flashlight. The solar powered one since not in use in the day, will be able to be charged and be available for use at night.

Contributed by Penny Furman We can survive for several weeks without food, several days without water, but most of the time only several hours without shelter. Do you think you could make shelter out of sticks and leaves? If you have a decent survival kit, you will include a tube tent, solar blanket, solar sleeping bag and most important some form of accelerant or fire making items to start a fire. Below are three types of shelter that are easy to build with relative ease. TARP SHELTER This is the easiest to set up. Simply run the cord through the middle of the tarp, pull the cord up and tie off on trees or other objects. If need be build your own pole stands to tie the tarp to. Then place large enough rocks on the corners of the tarp to secure it to the ground. The tarp can also be used to collect the dew that forms. Make a dent in the tent that leads to a container and let nature take its course. Tinder is middle link between a coal (such as that produced by a bow drill) and actual flames. Tinder is made from materials that catch a spark readily, or to which a coal can be added, and which can then be blown into a flame to actually start a fire. Tinder is easily combustible material used to ignite fires by rudimentary methods Preferably tinder is a dry fluffy substance. A mylar blanket also known as a space blanket, or emergency blanket is a blanket used in emergency situations to reduce heat loss in a person's body in five different ways:convection, conduction, thermal radiation, water evaporation, conduction, and respiration. Mylar blankets where first created by NASA to protect Skylab from the intense heat of the sun. The insulating material, a strong, plastic, vacuum-metallized film with a highly-efficient, infrared-reflective, vapor-deposited coating of aluminum, was created to be very lightweight in order to minimize weight impact on vehicle payload while also protecting spacecraft, equipment, and personnel from the extreme temperature fluctuations of space. Dandelion is a plant that grows wild all over the world. It is best known in North America as the weed that pops up in newly mowed lawns. The root is the main part of the plant used for medicinal purposes. Two-year-old plants have roots with the highest concentration of beneficial compounds and are dug up at that point to be used in preparations Loaded with vitamins A, C, D and B, dandelions also contain iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium, boron and potassium. Powerful antioxidants in dandelions help fight cancer and heart disease. The use of dandelions isn't new. Chinese medical practitioners used them to treat digestive and low milk flow problems for nursing mothers. Europeans used it to treat and heal boils, diarrhea and fevers. Native Americans boiled dandelions and used the liquid to help cure kidney disease, skin problems and digestive disorders. Resin oozing from a cut pine tree Common in most of the United States and Canada, pine trees also grow in other parts of the world, such as China. There are several varieties of pine trees which all will leach a sap when they have been damaged or scratched called resin, also called pitch. Pine resin has a host of different uses: as a sealant, glue, and varnish. There are as well several medicinal uses of pine resin. Contributed by Penny Furman
Prepping isn't just about getting your guns and your ammo. There is more to prepping than that because you need food and water to sustain yourself. Here are a few reminders of what you should not forget about. One problem we have as preppers is not being prepared enough. One thing necessary is to have books available to read about survival. Finished Mason Jar Candle Candles are a great source of light, heat and the ability to cook food. It is not hard to make your own candles and these candles will last a long time in storage. A mason jar makes a great candle holder. They have lids to screw on and the wax will be fine. Soy wax is one of the best waxes to use for survival because it produces no smoke or residue like paraffin wax that is made out of petroleum products. Bees wax is also great for making candles but it is more expensive. Normally we do not think of iron as being flammable, this is because bulk iron doesn't self-sustain its burning like most flammable materials. But the strands of steel wool are thin enough with enough surface area that heat produced is self-sustaining and will continue to burn through if there is enough air present. You can also use a 9-volt battery and short out the terminals across the steel wool, the resistive heating should be hot enough to start it lit. |
